Hello, and welcome to our news page! We are so excited to begin our journey with this page, where we will be featuring sector and company news, centered around the rail and power generation industries. And what better way to start off this process, than with discussing some of the exciting advancements happening in the rail industry, and showcasing some of these applications within our own projects!

As emissions reduction and cost savings focuses have increased across the rail sector, locomotive EPA and technology upgrade services have become areas of growth and focus for HPI. Our service offering is ever-evolving in an effort to provide solutions to our customers’ ever-changing needs.

A great example of our implementation of locomotive EPA and technology upgrades is a multi-phase project we are currently managing for a commuter agency. The first phase involved the modernization of F59PH locomotives, which entailed complete rebuild, testing and delivery to the commuter agency.

Within the rebuild, we performed an MUI (mechanical unit injection) to EFI (electronic fuel injection) conversion, attaining Tier 0+ emissions levels, and providing increased reliability and fuel savings. We equipped the units with cutting-edge microprocessor control systems to allow for increased adhesion, improved diagnostics, and additional fuel savings. Also, friction to roller bearing traction motor system conversions were applied to improve reliability and to extend the scheduled maintenance intervals.

In addition to the initial technology and EPA upgrades and unit rebuilds in Phase 1, we also converted several locomotives to be utilized as tender cars to house CNG supply, which will function as “daughter” units behind the modernized “mother” locomotive units that we have discussed. This tender car conversion lays the groundwork for future dual-fuel operation of these locomotives with diesel and CNG.

Stay tuned for news on subsequent phases of this project, in addition to other EPA and technology upgrade discussions that will be coming in the near future!
